Olivier Servais

Olivier Servais is Professor at the University of Louvain (Louvain-la-neuve) where he teaches anthropology of religion, natural and digital environment and symbolic systems. He currently serves his first mandate as treasurer of the ISSR. His research interests are focused on values, religions and their relation to the digital environment. On Religion, his historical project focuses on Anthropology of Ojibwas’s Resistance to Christianization and Modernization (Canada) He realized fieldworks and archives works since 1995, published partly in a book Des jésuites chez les Amérindiens ojibwas. Histoire et ethnologie d’une rencontre, Karthala. He also developed some works in socio-anthropology of Religion in Belgium with surveys on religious practices. In that context, he coordinates some recent studies on Pentecostalism and Catholicism in Belgium (with PJ Laurent). In the last years, he developed a new research interest in Virtual Worlds, digital practices and technology. He has co-edited two issue of Social Compass on «techno-scientific eschatologies » (with R. Liogier). Next-to his treasurer position, he has several experiences of financial management within international networks, Foundations, major research projects, or volunteer associations.
