Lea Freitas Perez has a bachelor of arts (“licença”) degree in History from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul at Porto Alegre, Brazil (1985). She is also the holder of a diploma of graduate studies in social Anthropology by the same university (1985), followed by another such diploma from École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris (1989). From the latter school she also gained her doctor’s degree in Social Anthropology and Ethnology (1993). After some years (1987-1996) as an Associate Professor at the Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul at Porto Alegre, she became a Full Professor at Federal University of Minas Gerais at Belo Horizonte, where she founded, in 2000, and directs to the present day, the Pierre Sanchis Center for the Study of Religion. She has also gained the prestigious status of a researcher accredited by the National Research Center (Brasília). She has often been a visiting professor and researcher at Lisbon’s “Instituto Universitário”. Beside the I.S.S.R., she belongs to several other scientific and professional institutions, among them, in Brazil, the Brazilian Anthropological Association (of whose scientific council she is a member), and the National Association for Research and Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences. Her research work, which blends historical, sociological, and anthropological approaches, bears mainly on the phenomenon of the feast, its relationship with religion and urban life, especially in Brazil and Portugal, and on racial relations, topics on which she has extensively written and published.
